Here's a painting I worked on for the past three days. I'm on a mission to start painting faces without relying heavily on reference. I do look at reference, but it's become a crutch that I picked up from artschool. This face in particular is loosely based on looking at reference which, believe it or not, is a mid-30s fresh faced, attractive woman. I thought I'd make an interesting challenge to paint a new face but interpret her as a man and really grunge it up.
I started painting the face in gray values and overlayed color on top... I like this method!
While I'm Photoshopping away at my day job, two things tend to happen: I go blind (the result of zooming in at plus 600%), especially in my right eye -- and suddenly struck with imagery in my head. These two pictures are the result of instant- head imagery recorded on post-it notes, then turned into drawings. Where am I going with these drawings? Who knows! But maybe a story can come out of it.
